Food Manager Certification Online

You can get your food manager certification online, and you can take the exam online too, with someone watching over a webcam. ServSafe, StateFoodSafety, and Learn2Serve all provide this, and with each one the certificate stays good for five years. Planning ahead matters most for the exam, since a person must supervise you while you take it.

The Difference Between a Handler Card and a Manager Certificate

A handler card covers anyone on staff who touches food, from the dishwasher to the cook, though whether you need one depends on state and local rules. A food manager certificate is aimed at owners, managers, and whoever is in charge during a shift. It deals with how to run a safe kitchen, not only how to work in one, according to Learn2Serve.

These are two different documents, and one generally cannot replace the other. Alaska breaks the pattern: if you hold a current manager certificate there, the state does not ask you to also carry its food worker card.

In Texas, the difference between them shows up plainly in the hours. A food handlers card takes a short course, while preparing for the manager role means 14 hours of training, and the certificate is good for five years, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

What the certificate is called

Pass an accredited exam and you earn the title Certified Food Protection Manager. Before paying, check with your local health department that the certification meets its requirements.

That title counts for more than the brand of the course. ServSafe, StateFoodSafety, and Learn2Serve all bring you to the same title.

A few states ask managers to do more. In Illinois, Certified Food Protection Managers at qualifying restaurants must also finish a training course on allergens that the state has signed off on.

Sitting the Exam at Home

A proctor has to watch the exam. A proctor checks your photo ID and keeps an eye on you by webcam, or in the same room, so nobody can cheat.

To use ServSafe online proctoring, your computer must be a PC or Mac with a working camera and mic. You cannot test on a phone, tablet, or Chromebook, so check your setup before you pay for the exam.

StateFoodSafety gives you three proctor options: a remote online proctor, a PSI testing center, or a proctor from your employer or health department. The testing center bills a $60 proctor fee, requires a government-issued photo ID, and asks that you arrive 15 minutes ahead of time, according to the details on the StateFoodSafety exam page.

Learn2Serve includes online video proctoring at no extra charge in its manager package and gives you two tries at the exam.

What the Course and Exam Cost

What you pay hinges on buying the course and exam together or separately.

ChoiceWhat you getCost
ServSafe Manager course and exam bundleAn eight-hour web course, the test, and remote supervision$179
ServSafe Manager exam access codeJust the test, with no training$38.99
StateFoodSafety testing center proctorWhat it costs to sit the test at a PSI location$60

If you have already studied, the exam code on its own may be enough, while the $179 package on the ServSafe product page includes the training. There are 90 questions on the exam, and you get two hours to finish.

Renewing After Five Years

Every provider covered here grants a certificate good for five years, and Texas matches that with its own state certificate. To renew with Learn2Serve, the manager retakes the exam before the old certificate runs out, so renewal means a test, not a whole new course.

Common Questions

How much time does earning a food manager certification take?

ServSafe's online course takes eight hours, and Learn2Serve reports that people typically study eight to 12 hours before the exam. Texas training programs take 14 hours. The exam adds as much as two hours beyond the course.

Can you use your notes during the food manager exam?

You cannot use notes or course material during the StateFoodSafety manager exam, since it is closed book. To pass with Learn2Serve, you must score at least 75 percent.

No. The cheapest food handlers course runs about $7 in Florida and up to roughly $22 in Utah, and in 32 states it is exactly $10. ServSafe's manager package costs $179.
